At the NTC Arts & Culture District in Liberty Station, the former Naval Training Center, sailors once trained for military service.
Now a new generation of “recruits” gets their training in art, music and dance.
A free NTC Summer Camp Open House is set for Saturday, April 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. so that parents can learn about the camps, visit the art studios, meet instructors and explore the NTC campus.
Summer Camp participants will also display information about their offerings during the Open House at the Dick Laub NTC Command Center, 2640 Historic Decatur Road.
Classes and workshops are being presented throughout the year by dozens of cultural groups.
But this summer, something special is taking shape: 10 NTC resident arts and culture groups are collaborating to present joint promotion Summer Camps at NTC: Where KIDS Get Creative.
Presented by the nonprofit NTC Foundation, Summer Camps at NTC are ideal for families looking for creative experiences for their children, ages 4-17.
Camps feature music, dance, theatre, creative writing, hands-on art making, photography and more — all in the historic heart of Liberty Station. “This summer, kids can explore and discover new skills in San Diego’s growing Arts and Culture District,” said NTC Foundation Executive Director Alan Ziter.
“We encourage parents to let their kids get creative with local artists this summer.”
Participating organizations include: Banyan Tree Learning Center, Bravo School of Art, California Ballet School, Mathnasium Point Loma, Monart School of Art, Outside the Lens, Recreational Music Center, San Diego Ballet, San Diego Watercolor Society and Theatre Arts School of San Diego.
NTC at Liberty Station is San Diego’s largest Arts & Cultural District located in historic buildings at the former Naval Training Center in the new Liberty Station neighborhood. With 28 park-like acres and 16 of its 26 buildings complete, NTC is home to nearly 80 museums and galleries, artist studios, dance companies, educational groups, multidisciplinary arts, creative retail and other organizations that showcase San Diego’s creative community and provide innovative experiences for the public. NTC is under the stewardship of the not-for-profit NTC Foundation.
The NTC Foundation was established in 2000 by the City of San Diego as a 501(c)3 nonprofit foundation to enrich the lives of San Diegans by renovating 26 historic buildings at the former Naval Training Center to
create, facilitate and operate a broad-based complex focused on experiencing the arts, culture, and creativity that are the hallmark of the San Diego region.
