A suspected carjacker who later robbed three Irish tourists at an Ocean Beach hostel was ordered Feb. 15 to stand trial on all charges, even though the three women did not testify during the preliminary hearing. Deputy District Attorney Dave Grapilon said it was too costly to fly all three victims from Ireland and, instead, their statements were recounted to the judge by police officers. The three women, all in their twenties, were sitting on the front steps at the Ocean Beach International Hostel on Newport Avenue when they were held up at gunpoint July 22. Treviyon DeShawn Rew, 18, is accused of taking their wallets, cell phones and passports. He is also charged with the attempted murder of Sean Simpson, 26, who was shot six times earlier that same day elsewhere in San Diego. Rew is also charged with carjacking. Rew and another man are suspected of using Simpson’s car for the robbery of the tourists and other crimes later that day. Simpson, of National City, identified Rew as the gunman who shot him near Simpson’s condominium. Rew’s preliminary hearing was heard in Chula Vista because the shooting and carjacking took place in National City. Judge Stephanie Sontag ordered Rew to stand trial on all 13 charges, and a trial date was set for March 2. Rew is being held on $1.5 million bail.
