PACIFIC BEACH — On Wednesday, Sept 1, Albertsons will hold four ribbon-cutting ceremonies to unveil new environmentally-friendly stores in Pacific Beach, Clairemont, Hillcrest and North Park. The grocery chain has renovated its stores with clean-energy technology, new products and new service departments including a gluten-free bakery. Its new 55,000 square-foot Clairemont location will be one of the first grocery stores in California to generate nearly 90 percent of its electricity within a 400-kilowatt fuel cell, one of the cleanest, quietest ways to generate energy. Other state-of-the-art environmental features in the stores include efficient LED lighting in the dairy and frozen food doors, photo sensors in 33 skylights to adjust electric light usage based on outdoor light intake, night curtains on cold cases to seal in cool air and water-saving faucets in restrooms. — MARIKO LAMB
