A 19-year-old man pleaded guilty Tuesday to attempted murder of a man who was stabbed five times at an airport parking lot.
Deputy District Attorney Matthew Greco said Alberto Moreno Jauregui has agreed to accept a 13-year prison term when he is sentenced on Nov. 14.
The Oct. 28, 2017 incident near the San Diego International Airport occurred around 5 p.m. when he tried to carjack a couple who parked a car in a long-term parking lot.
Jauregui admitted he caused great bodily injuries to the man who was stabbed in the chest. One wound punctured a kidney, said Greco.
Greco said the guilty plea spared the couple from having to testify in court at a preliminary hearing.
San Diego Superior Court Judge Fred Maguire is expected to dismiss other charges of attempted carjacking, two counts of felony assault to both the man and his wife, and attempted kidnapping.
Criminal proceedings had been suspended against Jauregui since March after his attorney doubted his mental competency to stand trial. However, Judge Margo Woods found him mentally competent on Oct. 3 and proceedings against Jauregui resumed. Jauregui was accused of grabbing the woman around the neck and demanding the couple’s car keys. Her husband intervened and he was stabbed several times before the suspect ran off.
He was arrested Nov. 7, 2017 by San Diego Harbor Police. Jauregui remains in the George Bailey Detention Facility without bail.
