The eyes of the women’s tennis world are on San Diego this week, specifically the La Costa Resort & Spa, as the 2007 Acura Classic unfolds. The championship match is slated for Sunday afternoon, Aug. 5.
This year’s Wimbledon champion Venus Williams, 2006 defending Acura champ Maria Sharapova, and top-ranked Justine Henin headline the field of players this week at the 24th annual event, the final time the tournament is being played in San Diego.
“It’s been a few years since I’ve played in San Diego, and I am proud to have won the tournament each of the last three times I played it,” Williams said recently. “In some ways I feel like I’m returning as defending champion. I know this will be the last year for the Acura Classic, and I’d love to win for the fourth time and go down in the books as the tournament’s final champion.”
Other top names entered this week include Martina Hingis, Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic, Serena Williams, Anna Chakvetadze, Nadia Petrova, Nicole Vaidisova and Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli.
