Accused hammer killer committed to psychiatric hospital

A man suspected of killing a 37-year-old man with a sledgehammer on Midway Drive in Point Loma has been committed to a state psychiatric hospital after a judge found him mentally incompetent to stand trial.
Michael Anthony Dean was killed Jan. 8 after being struck repeatedly with a sledgehammer allegedly by Greg Repp Jennings, 50.
San Diego Superior Court Judge Margie Woods read doctors’ reports about Jennings and ruled he was not mentally competent to understand legal proceedings. The ruling said Jennings lacked the capacity to decide whether to take antipsychotic medications and his mental disorder required the medication. The judge authorized involuntary administration of antipsychotic medications.
Woods ruled that Jennings receive treatment at from Liberty Healthcare at the George Bailey Detention Facility, but also authorized officials to take him to Patton State Hospital for more treatment if he does not respond.
If Jennings does not become competent within three years, he will be returned for another mental competency hearing before a judge.
Attorney Monique Carter told a judge on Feb. 8 she doubted her client, Greg Repp Jennings, 50, was mentally competent and criminal proceedings were then suspended by another judge.
Deputy District Attorney Michael Reilly said he did not know if Jennings knew the victim, but they had been arguing around 6:20 p.m. on Jan. 8 near a bus stop on Midway Drive near West Point Loma Boulevard. The sledgehammer was small, weighing 64 ounces, but the victim was struck multiple times before he collapsed, said Reilly.
