Criminal proceedings have been suspended for a young man accused of attempted murder and assault of a couple at San Diego International Airport’s parking lot after his attorney doubted he was mentally competent.
Alberto Moreno Jauregui, 19, will get a psychiatric evaluation in jail by a doctor before he appears April 16 before a judge to determine if he understands court proceedings. His attorney told a San Diego Superior Court judge she doubted his mental competency, so the judge was required to order his psychiatric evaluation and canceled a preliminary hearing.
Jauregui is also charged with attempted kidnapping, attempted carjacking and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon in the Oct. 28, 2017 incident near the San Diego International Airport.
Jauregui is accused of grabbing the woman around the neck and demanding the couple’s car keys. Her husband intervened and he was stabbed several times before the suspect ran off around 5 p.m.
The stabbing victim was seriously injured and taken to a hospital where he was treated for several days before being released.
Jauregui has pleaded not guilty to all charges and remains in jail on $1 million bail. He was arrested Nov. 7, 2017 by San Diego Harbor Police.
Jauregui remains in the George Bailey Detention Facility without bail.
