Mission Bay girls lacrosse team came out with an impressive 14-8 home victory over Clairemont on April 14 to earn the Bucs their first win of the season.
“Honestly, we’re really focused on ourselves,” said head coach Hayley Burke. “Last year, we were in the lower division and we won our league. We lost 12 seniors last year and this year we got bumped up into a more difficult division.”
Mission Bay swept both games against Clairemont last season on their way to a 14-4 overall record and hope that Friday’s victory is a prelude of things to come. This season’s lacrosse team has three-quarters of its roster playing competitive lacrosse for the first time as they close out the remaining seven games left on the schedule. Their upcoming game against Mira Mesa on Wednesday will be a rematch from April 10 when Mission Bay fell 9-1.
“It’s a big learning year for us and we’re playing some really good teams,” Burke added. “That’s why we’re really focused on us and just improving every game. By the end of the season if we get another couple of wins under our belt that’s all we can ask for and making sure that we’re getting better.”
Among the standout players so far this year for Mission Bay are senior co-captains Jordyn Jones, Eve Brogan, Izzy Garcia, and Haley Venard along with sophomore goalie Sydney Kidd who has had an impressive save percentage throughout the season.
Mission Bay has a total of seven games remaining with four being at home versus Point Loma on April 21, Academy of Our Lady of Peace on April 26, Canyon Hills on April 28, and Mater Dei on April 29 as they close out the season with back to back road matches versus University City on May 3 and San Diego High School on May 5. After the win on Friday, the Bucs stayed and rooted on the boys lacrosse team to a victory over Preuss School UCSD later that evening.
