Becoming Always will present choreography by Terry Wilson, along with company dancers Matthew Armstrong, Cecily Holcombe, and Mario Jaimes. Company dancers Lauren Christie, Isabel Desmet, Luci Salinas, and intern Ileana Lim will grace the stages this March, showcasing a repertory by Mario Jaimes and Terry Wilson, with premieres by Matthew Armstrong, Cecily Holcombe, and Wilson. Each dance is distinctly different and will showcase the strengths of this extraordinary group of artists.
Matthew Armstrong in his first season with the company, shares Stepping Back, Move Forward, a piece that stems from the “idea of separation and what we must confront internally within the moment the choice is made. Seconds turn into constant change, adaptation to new routines, and learning how to accept and process emotional baggage. Baggage that is tied to us from past experiences so we can continue living in a new direction, possibly familiar, possibly unknown. We must be sensitive to our shadows of self-doubt, weighing us down but make it clear to ourselves that those shadows cannot dictate the decisions we make from this point forward on how to survive and thrive.”
Cecily Holcombe’s The Underneath investigates fear, with the metaphor regarding the depth of the sea, what we know and what we don’t know, and the surprise presence of an octopus! Wilson’s premiere is solely dedicated to the weaving of seven solos featuring the exquisite dancers of the company and their personal experiences of embodied memories.
Mario Jaimes shares Madly Indulge (2013) a solo touching upon the vulnerable struggle of addiction and obsession. Some find the light, and some remain in the dark, asking: how does it feel to part ways with something that was once so familiar? Do I want to part ways? Wilson’s Lovers in Love (2021) will be revisited, with an added duet, featuring music from the ’60s, and celebrating the nature of ongoing love.
