The San Diego Rebellion are gearing up for what they hope will be a great Women’s National Football Conference (WNFC) season that kicks off versus the Utah Falcons on April 1.
The Rebellion then travel to face off with the Las Vegas Silver Stars on April 15 before the team plays its first home game of the six-game regular season on April 29 against the Seattle Majestics at Westview High School.
“We want the fans in San Diego to know that we’re here to support both girls and women in football,” said San Diego Rebellion co-owner and quarterback Knengi Martin. “We are always trying to get involved in the youth girls’ flag that’s going on here in San Diego. I think the biggest thing is that we love to be an inspiration for girls who want to play football, whether it’s tackle or flag, we support both.”
The Rebellion has also been active in recent months putting on clinics in both San Diego and Los Angeles in partnership with XFL’s Vegas Vipers’ linebacker coach Dr. Jen Welter. Welter is best known as the first woman to coach in the NFL as an assistant linebacker coach for the Arizona Cardinals in 2015.
“More than anything we work with the LA Chargers because one of their youth coordinators played for the Texas Elite team,” Martin added. “So, when she got the job with the Chargers, she immediately said yes to working with us.”
The Rebellion recently finished a youth camp with the Chargers and is currently in the process of setting up a second one. The WNFC played its inaugural season in 2019 and currently has 16 teams competing with the top four making the playoffs. The San Diego Rebellion was founded in 2018 and made it to the championship match in 2021 where they fell to the reigning three-time champion Texas Elite Spartans.
