The US women’s national team won its fourth-straight SheBelieves Cup Trophy on Wednesday, Feb. 22, after a 2-1 victory over Brazil at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas thanks to San Diego Wave forward Alex Morgan’s golazo just before the halftime whistle.
Morgan, who is the reigning NWSL Golden Boot winner, took a left-footed shot from 20-yards-out that beat the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Lorena to give the US the lead. Morgan played along teammates Naomi Girma, who won NWSL rookie and defender of the year honors in 2022, and midfielder Taylor Kornieck during the week-long tournament.
This is the sixth SheBelieves Cup trophy overall for the USWNT, which went undefeated over its three matches starting with a 2-0 victory over Canada on Feb. 16 and a 1-0 win over Japan on Feb. 19 before closing the tournament by defeating Brazil.
The team was led in scoring by Chicago Red Stars forward Mallory Swanson who notched four goals over the three games including one in the 63rd minute on Wednesday. “Alex doing Alex things,” said Swanson. “Simple, left foot, classic. She was getting beat up all first half and ultimately she punished them.”
San Diego Wave starts the 2023 regular season versus Chicago at Snapdragon Stadium on March 25.
