There is a new resident at Birch Aquarium — the unique Warty Frogfish, which is part of the anglerfish family. Guests can find this fish in the Nursery in the Hall of Fishes.
Here are some cool facts about Warty Frogfish:
- An adult frogfish is pretty small – this one is about the size of a tennis ball. Their hardy body resembles a sponge.
- Frogfish are experts at blending in with their surroundings by changing colors. Their colors can vary widely, from browns to reds, yellows to purples and white. They camouflage well in reefs.
- This fish can fish! Frogfish have a lure (modified spine) on their heads that looks like a little worm or shrimp.
- They wave their lure, which acts like a “fishing pole” to attract potential prey. They will wait for the prey to take the bait and quickly gulp down their meal.
- Frogfish move around by using their specialized fins and change position by “walking” on their hand-like fins.
