Four Buccaneers got a chance to compete in the ninth annual SDFNL Showcase game on Friday, Dec. 23, at Mission Bay High School. Quarterback Ethan Silber and wide receiver Jack Ryan played together on the offensive side of the ball for the blue team while linebacker Rico Nava and offensive lineman Teddy Buettner played on the white team as the four players effectively ended their high school careers together.

“I thought it was super cool and it was a good experience,” said Silber. “It’s very high level so the practices were really intense and the game was super fun.”

Silber helped lead the Bucs to an 8-5 record and a trip to the semifinals after postseason victories over Westview and Montgomery.

“Having someone as close as my quarterback and friend there was a privilege,” said Ryan. “The coolest thing about Mission Bay had to be building the unforgettable memories and bonds with players and coaches that I’ll have forever.”

The blue team ended up winning 48-7 with Ryan contributing one catch for eight yards. He has decided to continue playing at the next level and is hoping to stay in California in order to be close to his family. Among the schools being considered are Cal Lutheran, Redlands, and Pomona-Pitzer.

As for Silber, he is also considering several schools including Cal Lutheran where he may end up playing alongside Ryan yet again if all the stars align.

“Right now, I’m leaning towards Cal Lutheran and playing football there,” he said. “If not, I’m going to just weigh my options with other schools.”

The victorious blue team was coached by Doug Brady who was an All-Palomar League selection at quarterback for the Poway Titans and also a D1 quarterback at New Mexico State University in 2002. The white team was led by Imperial High School head coach David Shaw with practices in preparation for the game taking place at Hoover High School.

As for who will take over the offense at Mission Bay High School starting next season, Silber has some final words of advice and inspiration. “Everything runs through the quarterback,” he said.”In terms of leadership taking control of the team is the most important thing. Don’t be afraid to take charge.”
