UC San Diego Park & Market recently announced the launch of Intersections, a new interdisciplinary event series, presented by UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies, taking place at the multi-tenant, mixed-use business, arts, and educational office building in downtown San Diego’s East Village. Starting in January, a number of Intersections events offering new, diverse takes on traditional ideas and forms in a variety of disciplines, from artistic performances to educational lectures will take place at Park & Market’s state-of-the-art Guggenheim Theatre.

Intersections is curated by Andrew Waltz, director of arts management at Park & Market. Upcoming Intersections events include a concert series curated and hosted in partnership with leading ethnographer-artist Yale Strom (above), which will offer authentic explorations of global music.

“Intersections fits directly into the mission of Park & Market, which is to forge connections between people, artists, educators, businesses and innovators both in San Diego and worldwide,” said Waltz. “We are thrilled to be working with curatorial partners including Yale Strom in order to bring world-class artists, writers, leaders and experts to our world-class venue. Even more exciting is the prospect of introducing San Diego audiences to ideas or approaches to traditional forms they might not otherwise encounter in a live space, in lineups they may not previously have imagined, all with thoughtful narrators to guide them through the experience.”

The upcoming Intersections concert series will be hosted by violinist Strom, one of the world’s leading ethnographer-artists of klezmer and Romani music and history.

“I am thankful for the opportunity to collaborate with Park & Market to bring an eclectic, influential variety of musicians into a brand-new venue in downtown San Diego as part of Intersections,” said Strom. “Having traveled and performed throughout the world, I think it’s incredibly valuable to be able to bring artists from everywhere who have never performed in San Diego to play in our city. I love seeing how artists and genres can mix and complement each other, and look forward to bringing San Diego audiences along with us on this intersectional journey.”

Scheduled Intersections Concerts:

Jan. 27, 7 p.m., The Guggenheim Theatre, UC San Diego Park & Market: “6 & 88 featuring Irving Flores, Tina Chong and Joshua White”

World-renowned San Diego pianists Irving Flores, Tina Chong and Joshua White, who have never performed together before, will share the stage for an exploration of the piano through jazz, Latin and classical music. Get tickets here. Yale Strom will host and conduct a Q&A with the artists after their performances.

Feb. 16, 7 p.m., The Guggenheim Theatre, UC San Diego Park & Market: “Samir Chatterjee Trio”

Samir Chatterjee, a virtuoso tabla player, will perform Indian classical music with his trio, featuring Paul Livingstone on sitar and Suman Laha on other Indian stringed instruments. Get tickets here. Yale Strom will host and conduct a Q&A with the trio after their performance.

March 10, 7 p.m., The Guggenheim Theatre, UC San Diego Park & Market: “Spain and Beyond: Adam Del Monte, Guitarist Extraordinaire”

Billed as one of the leading flamenco and classical guitarists of his generation, Adam Del Monte will perform a selection of flamenco and classical guitar pieces, in addition to his own compositions. Get tickets here. Yale Strom will host and conduct a Q&A with Mr. Del Monte after his performance.

April 12, 7 p.m., The Guggenheim Theatre, UC San Diego Park & Market: “Gilbert Castellanos Quintet”

Guadalajara-born and San Diego-based jazz trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos will give the audience a grand tour of jazz a’la John Coltrane. Get tickets here. Yale Strom will host and conduct a Q&A with Gilbert after his performance.

Future Intersections events will be announced as they are confirmed. Events include concerts and other artistic performances, spoken word, educational presentations and lectures, demonstrations and more. For more information, visit: https://parkandmarket.ucsd.edu/events/.
