The La Mesa-El Cajon Branch of the American Association of University Women is planning a holiday party to celebrate winter with a new charity and old friends.

The charity is the San Diego Food Bank.

Members and the public may bring canned food and non-perishables to help feed San Diego on Saturday, Dec. 10, to 4031 Avocado Blvd, La Mesa at the Foothills United Methodist Church’s King Hall. The goal is to bring 200 pounds of food.

According to the Food Bank website, “The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank and our North County Food Bank chapter comprise the largest hunger-relief organization in San Diego County. Last year, the Food Bank distributed 63 million pounds of food, and the Food Bank serves, on average, 500,000 people per month in San Diego County.”

“Through our North County Food Bank chapter and by partnering with nearly 500 nonprofit partners with feeding programs, the Food Bank provides nutritious food to individuals and families in need in communities throughout San Diego County.”

“Of San Diego County’s 3.3 million residents*, over 1 million people face nutrition insecurity.** Of this number, 284,500 are children.** San Diegans facing nutrition insecurity are unable to provide three nutritious meals a day for themselves or their households. Currently, 2 in 5 children are nutrition insecure.** (*U.S. Census Bureau. 2020. **San Diego Hunger Coalition. 2021)”. Monetary donations are also welcomed.

Returning this year are The Merry Ukes, led by Marge Saberg. According to Saberg, “they will share holiday music to warm the spirit and soothe the soul”. “There could be some dancing, storytelling, and shenanigans,” reports program co-chair, Sandy Galea-Martinez. Additionally, there will be a photo opportunity with some of Santa’s helpers.

The social hour begins at 9:30 a.m. and the meeting commences at 10 a.m.

Meetings are open to the public and members are encouraged to invite friends and family, co-workers, and associates.
