After a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the 2022 Point Loma Association annual dinner and auction was back in person on Monday, Oct. 24 at the Kona Kai Resort and Spa. This event celebrates and supports the Point Loma community by raising money to continuously beautify the neighborhood and brighten the future of the Peninsula.
This year’s theme was “Color the Night: All Wrapped up in Art” in recognition of the ongoing mural and art activities of the PLA. Guests were encouraged to wear costumes, and they did not disappoint. Community and board members dressed to the nines as their favorite artist, work or art, or favorite color. Frida Kahlo, Mona Lisa, and Art Garfunkel were in attendance – just to name a few.
The awards ceremony portion of the event recognized board members’ achievements and contributions to the Point Loma community. The Community Champion Award was awarded to the late Dave Martin, for inspiring and mentoring others, creating community, and fostering the restaurant scene all over the Peninsula.
The Lighthouse Award was presented to Point Loma Assembly for its 100-plus years of dedication to the Point Loma community. Pam Fuchs, Point Loma Assembly president, accepted the award along with a certificate of recognition from Mayor Todd Gloria’s office. Point Loma Assembly is dedicated to promoting literary, social, educational, philanthropic, civic, and artistic work in addition to restoring and maintaining their historic building on Talbot Street in Point Loma.
More than 260 guests attended the event, raising nearly $150,000 in gross revenue through sponsorships, donations, and live, and silent auction bids. These donations help to beautify, inform and advocate to improve the quality of life on “The Point” for generations to come.
The live auction, hosted by former San Diego Gulls announcer Pierre Charmasson, garnered a large portion of the donations that will be used for clean-ups and community beautifications across Point Loma. Bid packages included getaways in Breckenridge, Las Vegas, and Sedona, naval submarine tours, guided wine tastings, Phil’s BBQ dinner at the Point Loma Firehouse, two hours of landscaping from the PLA Mean Green Team, and more.
