The San Diego Premiere of The Children, by British playwright Lucy Kirkwood, takes audiences into a dangerously imagined future.
Kirkwood’s quietly suspenseful The Children premiered on Broadway in 2017 after opening in England at the Royal Court Theatre and was nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Broadway Play and a Tony Award for Best New Play.
San Diego director Kim Strassburger returns to the Moxie Theatre (6663 El Cajon Blvd. Ste. N,) to direct the taut drama that plays Nov. 6 through Dec. 4.
The Children opens in an isolated cottage after a national disaster in England. Three retired nuclear scientists find themselves unexpectedly reunited for one evening, intentions are revealed, and this riveting play turns on a dime.
Kirkwood is an acclaimed playwright and screenwriter. She is the winner of 2013 Critics’ Circle Theatre Award, Evening Standard Theatre Award, Laurence Olivier Award, and Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for her play Chimerica which is now a Channel 4 mini-series in the U.K. She is currently a writer in residence at Clean Break Theatre. In June 2018, Kirkwood was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in its 40 Under 40 initiative.
Strassburger is a San Diego Critics Circle award-winning director whose work has been seen on stages all over San Diego and was seen most recently at MOXIE in their 2019 production of Handbagged.
Strassburger was the recipient of a National Artist Teacher Fellowship that funded her study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). She also became a member of Lincoln Center Theater’s Directors Lab. In addition, she teaches and directs at the Coronado School of the Arts.
The show runs Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.
