San Diego Loyal was unable to pull off the upset in its third-round match of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on April 19 after falling to LA Galaxy 1-0 at Dignity Health Sport Park.
Led by soccer legend and former LA Galaxy star Landon Donovan, the Loyal was well supported by San Diego fans who traveled to Carson to help push the team to a victory.
The winning goal came courtesy of striker Kévin Cabral in the 28th minute who took advantage when his shot rebounded off the post and he was then able to beat goalkeeper Koke Vegas on his second try.
At the 77th minute is when LA Galaxy brought in striker Javier Chicharito Hernández to put the match away but Vegas did not allow it in his only shot on goal to extend the lead.
San Diego Loyal had a clear opportunity to tie the game in the 88th minute when a pass from defender Elijah Martin found forward Evan Conway a meter from goal, but he was unable to direct the ball as it made contact with his shoulder instead of his head.
Six San Diego Loyal players were not activated for the game including forward Thomas Amang and midfielder Jack Blake with this being the team’s sixth game in 16 days. The loss eliminates the San Diego Loyal from the tournament as they now prepare for their next game on Saturday, April 30, when they travel to face the defending Western Conference champion Tampa Bay Rowdies at Al Lang Stadium.
