A group of Point Loma High athletes, led by girls soccer and water polo, collected post-season honors in all-league and all-CIF teams just announced.

GIRLS SOCCER

A trio of girls soccer players were the only Pointer athletes to earn all-CIF honors. It was widely believed the Pointers had the best midfielders in the county and that was proven with senior sisters Corinne and Caitlin Wilson and senior Erin Denney capturing all-CIF honors. The Wilsons were first team selections and Denney was named to the second team. The trio also topped the first team all-league list.

Their soccer team, under head coach Jose Garcia, went 12-6-4 overall (4-2-2, second in Western League) before a post-season run that took them all the way to a state regional semi-final game lost on penalty kicks.

Second team all-league honors went to seniors Raya Caldwell and Jenna Ruthven.

League champion: Coronado.

GIRLS WATER POLO

The team, under head coach Brandon Huff, went undefeated (10-0) in Central League play (17-12 overall) before dropping an 8-5 decision to Eastlake in the second round of CIF Div. II playoffs.

First team all-league honors went to seniors Rylie Hage, Summer Nelson, Rebecca Sadler, and junior Anne Borger. Senior Carolann Hochbrueckner was named to the second team.

Athlete of the Year: Hage

Coach of the Year: Huff

League champion: Point Loma.

BOYS SOCCER

The boys, under head coach Elliott Savitz, posted a record of 8-6-3 overall (5-3, second in Western League) before losing their CIF Open (highest) Division opening round game to league foe St. Augustine on penalty kicks. The Saints pinned 1-0 and 3-0 losses on the Pointers during seasonal play.

First team all-league honors went to seniors Emiliano Herrerias, Cian Cox, and David Nuricombo. Second team all-stars were seniors Max Caffoo, Asa Traylor, and Angel Avina.

League champion: St. Augustine.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Under head coach Josh Aros, boys basketball turned in an overall record of 8-14 (4-4, third place in City League). Seeded 10th in CIF Div. III playoffs, the Pointers fell short of No. 7 Steele Canyon, losing 57-53 in the opening round.

Point guard/wing Ali Johnson was the only team member honored (first team all-league) after leading his team in points (16.1 per game) and steals.

League champion: Patrick Henry.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Head coach Curtis Norwood led his team to an overall record of 11-9 (4-4, third place, Eastern League). His girls destroyed Escondido Charter 47-21 in a first round CIF Div. III game before absorbing a 65-37 beating by Rancho Buena Vista in the quarterfinals.

First team all-league honors went to senior Mikaela Miles who sank the winning basket when the Pointers went 24-3, winning a CIF championship in 2020, her sophomore year. Second team member Emma Heckman, a junior, was a freshman member of that championship team.

League champion: Lincoln.

BOYS WRESTLING

David Loewen (184 pounds) qualified for the local Masters Tournament with a third place finish in the CIF Div. III title meet. Also earning a spot in the CIF finals were Erik Greenway (122), Zackary Canziani (140), Charles Romero (172), and Josh Pryor (222).

GIRLS WRESTLING

Eve Norvan (118) finished second in the CIF Div. II championship meet, earning her entry in the Masters event. Katie Wright (133) was the only other Pointer qualifier in the CIF meet.
