San Diego’s Brandon Nakashima, currently ranked No. 75 in the ATP singles rankings, has entered the upcoming 132nd annual Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship scheduled for Friday, March 4 through Sunday, March 6 at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, 2000 Spindrift Drive.
The 20-year-old Nakashima, one of the rising stars in men’s professional tennis, began the 2022 season in January by reaching the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 event in Sydney, Australia. He also played at the Australian Open, falling in the first round to seventh-seed and eventual semifinalist Matteo Berrettini of Italy 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
This past month, Nakashima competed at ATP tournaments in Dallas and Delray Beach, Fla., where he advanced to the second round in each event. He played this week at the Abierto Mexicano, an ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco, Mexico.
Last October, Nakashima had the opportunity to compete in front of hometown fans when he played the San Diego Open ATP 250 tournament at Barnes Tennis Center. After defeating Italy’s Fabio Fognini 6-7 (5), 6-1, 7-5, he fell to top-seed Andrey Rublev of Russia 6-2, 6-1 in a second-round match.
Nakashima finished 2021 on a strong note when he advanced to the semifinals of the Intesa Sanpaolo Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan, Italy and reached a career-high No. 62 in the world.
Prior to turning professional in 2019, Nakashima played one season of collegiate tennis at the University of Virginia and was named 2019 ACC Freshman of the Year. For additional information on Nakashima, click here.
Nakashima will pair in the La Jolla tournament with his 18-year-old brother Bryce Nakashima, a nationally-ranked junior player who now competes on the International Tennis Federation World Tennis Tour.
“We were very excited when Brandon contacted us about playing in the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship. He is an amazing talent on the tennis court and definitely a player to watch on the ATP Tour,” said tournament director Bill Kellogg. “Local tennis fans will have a great opportunity to watch Brandon play some top-level doubles with his younger brother Bryce.”
In addition to Nakashima and his brother, the historic tennis event, which originated in Northern California in 1890, will feature a strong field of collegiate players, along with independent competitors including top teaching professionals, promising juniors, college coaches and former touring professionals.
Many of the best collegiate teams in the country are scheduled to compete, including:

Boston College                                        Stanford
    Ball State                                                  Southern Methodist University
    California Lutheran University               UC Berkeley
    Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS)            UC Los Angeles
College of the Desert                              UC San Diego
Nebraska                                                  University of Nevada, Las Vegas
    Pepperdine                                              University of San Diego
Pomona Pitzer                                         University of Southern California
    San Diego Christian College                  Villanova
    San Diego State University

La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club welcomes tennis spectators to view the tournament with free admission. On-site parking is available for a nominal fee. Fans can tune-in to RadioTennis.com on Saturday, March 5 and Sunday, March 6 to listen to live audio play-by-play of the day’s matches on Court No. 1 at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. Tennis broadcaster Ken Thomas will provide live webcast commentary at https://radiotennis.com/.
