San Diego Section CIF playoff pairings for all winter team sports were recently announced with every Point Loma High team earning a berth. Boys and girls soccer were seeded in the highest level Open Division, comprising the top eight teams in San Diego and Imperial counties. The highest seed or league champion is the home team.
After the first round of playoff action Pointer girls in soccer and basketball came through as the only winners.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Finished 10-8 overall, 4-4 (third place Eastern League). Head coach Curtis Norwood, assistant Taylor Bobbitt. Seeded No. 5 in Div. III, defeated No. 12 Escondido Charter 47-21 before being eliminated by No. 4 seed Rancho Buena Vista 65-37.
BOYS SOCCER
Finished 8-5-3 overall, 5-3 (second place, City Western League). Head coach Elliott Savitz. Seeded No. 6 in Open Division, played a scoreless game and overtime before a heartbreaking loss to league rival No. 3 St. Augustine 4-3 in a shootout.
GIRLS SOCCER
Finished 9-4-4 overall, 4-2-2 (second place, City Western League). Head coach Jose Garcia. Seeded No. 8 in Open Division, dominated and defeated the county’s top-ranked Bonita Vista Barons by a 2-0 score. The No. 8 seeded Pointers defeated No. 4 Del Norte 2-1 this week on goals by Erin Denney and Gwen Rauvola. The girls play in the CIF Open Division finals at 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 25 against No. 3 San Marcos at Hilltop High.
GIRLS WATER POLO
Finished 17-12 overall, 10-0 (first place, City Central League). Head coach Ken Toma, assistant Francisco Martinezcuello. Seeded No. 6 in Div. II, defeated San Pascual 8-3 Feb. 9, eliminated by No. 3 Eastlake 8-5 Feb. 12.
