Effective Saturday, July 12, the La Jolla YMCA is renamed the Dan McKinney Family YMCA following the family’s $5 million donation toward improvements in its programs, facilities and need-based membership services. The donation is one of the largest since the Y opened in 1964. The McKinneys are La Jolla residents and longtime community advocates and YMCA donors. Dan McKinney, 96, first went to the San Pedro Y as a child and later served a a board member.
“We are forever grateful to the McKinney family for their continued support of the YMCA,” said Sue Ball, regional vice president for the YMCA of San Diego County. “Membership and program fees alone do not fully cover true costs of our services, and it is because of the generosity of our community that we are able to give right back.”
The event also marks the beginning of a fundraising campaign to complete the buildout of the Cliffridge facility, which began in 2008. Outreach for major gifts will be conducted through the end of 2014, with the hope of raising $13 million needed to break ground in early 2015.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the La Jolla Y serves more than 18,330 members and participants annually throughout the communities of La Jolla, University City, North Clairemont, Sorrento Valley, Carmel Valley and North Pacific Beach.
Dan McKinney, now 96, first went to the YMCA in San Pedro as a child, where he attended camp and served as a camp counselor while his mom was working. As a teenager, McKinney used the gym at the Y for rehabilitation on his leg after an accident on a ranch. And later, McKinney served as a board member.
