The La Jolla High and University City High wrestling teams have hit the mats as another season unfolds.
At La Jolla High, the Vikings and head coach Ryan Lennard have a number of new faces on the scene this season.
Key wrestlers look to include Tyler Rohr, Davis Blasquez, Joey Bruder, Daniel Gloven and Madison Huemmer.
La Jolla recorded a third-place finish at a tourney at Otay Ranch to start the season and will next be in action when it meets Serra High on Dec. 19.
Action after the holidays kicks off on Jan. 8 when La Jolla meets Mission Bay and Cathedral Catholic.
The Vikings will also participate in the Holtville Tournament Jan. 25-26, then close out regular-season action versus University City on Jan. 31.
“We have a lot of new kids out this year, so with some dedication put forth, we will be a strong force in the Western League and City Conference,” Lennard said.
At neighboring University City High, the Centurions of head coach Jeret Needham will look to improve on last season’s second-place finish in the Western League. Leading the way will be senior captain Steven Esquivel.
“He leads by example, always striving to be a positive role model for the team and his younger brothers, Anthony (junior) and Mickel (freshman),” Needham said.
According to Needham, this year’s team may be young, but he couldn’t ask for a harder-working group of wrestlers.
“I’m looking forward to seeing their hard work and dedication pay off with another successful season,” Needham added.
UC is in action next Wednesday, Dec. 19, when the Centurions host Mira Mesa High. UC will finish out the regular season on Feb. 8 when it hosts Cathedral.
