Two local scholastic field hockey teams have their sights set on sticking it to the opposition this season in the form of defeats.
At The Bishop’s School, Head Coach Kristin Davidson and the Lady Knights are coming off of an 11-11 season, including a second-round CIF loss to San Pasqual.
This year’s edition will look to seniors Daryl Griglak, Winnie Eastwood and Riley Sexton, and juniors Sarah Shults (goalie) and Christi Rodriguez, along with sophomores Lia Sagerman and Jeanne Vaccari to contribute.
“We have great leadership from our six seniors ” so they are strong and ready to play well as a team,” Davidson said. “The players are excited about their success last season and are ready to match and surpass last season. They were also awarded with the CIF highest GPA award for field hockey and are working to maintain excellence in the classroom.”
Davidson noted that the midfield is very fast and has great stick skills, while the team’s goalie is in her second year at varsity with a very experienced defense.
“As usual, the girls’ endurance is great and most players can play an intense full game without substitution,” Davidson added.
At neighboring La Jolla High, the Lady Vikings and Head Coach Kristy Wolfmayer are looking to improve on last season’s one-win campaign.
Key players look to be Claire Mittermiller, Kaitlin Sharpe and Lauren Steinmentz.
“I believe this season is going to be a huge improvement from our first season last year,” Wolfmayer said. “I have expectations to go .500. We have a strong team, who has been working all year round to improve their skills. We have a large number of returners, along with a handful of new players.”
