The Veterans Museum and Memorial Center has established a rotating exhibit to showcase outstanding individual San Diego community contributions by military veterans.
First to be featured is Nick Aguilar, who served as director of student policies and judicial affairs at University of California, at San Diego for 30 years. He retired in 2006.
Aguilar was the prime mover in establishing Veterans Day as an official holiday throughout the entire UC system. He also established the Student Affirmative Action Program, the Rape Prevention Education Program, the Education Equity Program and the Student Office for Human Relations.
Aguilar is a member of the San Diego County Board of Education. He joined the Army in 1965 and served in Vietnam as a paratrooper with the 173rd Airborne Brigade.
The Aguilar exhibit will be on display through September. Museum members are in the process of nominating others to be honored, according to Nicole Nore, assistant curator.
The San Diego Air & Space Museum now offers a way for the public to search the contents of its library and archives.
It’s called AeroCat, a new online catalog offering immediate Internet access to thousands of items in an extensive collection relating to aviation, space history and technology. The site address is www.sandiegoairandspace.org.
The museum’s aerospace library is the third largest in the nation. It holds many unique, rare and one-of-a-kind items reflecting San Diego’s rich aviation heritage, consisting of books, periodicals, films and videotapes, more than two million photographs, aircraft manuals and drawings.
EOS International, headquartered in Carlsbad, developed the cataloging software. With more than 3,000 clients worldwide, EOS is a leader in automation software for specialized libraries.
