Three senior girls from La Jolla Country Day School (LJCD) have been nominated to the 2008 McDonald’s All American High School Basketball teams, one of the highest distinctions in high school basketball.
Twenty-five players from San Diego, along with 2,500 high school seniors nationwide, have been nominated for what will eventually come down to 24 boys and 24 girls for the final teams. The finalists, who will be announced in late February, will go to Milwaukee to play in the March 26 games.
Chelsea Burns, Dominique Conners and Janae Fulcher have all been playing varsity basketball for LJCD for their four years of high school, and all three have been signed by colleges and offered scholarships because of their talent. Burns is headed to Utah State, Conners to the University of San Diego and Fulcher to Arizona State University.
“Whether they make it depends on how they play and how the team does,” LJCD varsity basketball coach Terri Bamford said. “Our team is first in the county right now and 14th in the state. We’re headed to the playoffs.”
Although the three are the only players from La Jolla to be nominated this year, in 2004 LJCD had a girl make it to the All American team, and in the last four years the school has received three other nominations.
The McDonald’s All American games have an impressive history, with a boys team since 1977 and a girls team since 2002. Former players include Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’Neal.
A portion of the proceeds from the games goes to the Ronald McDonald House Charities.
