The Mission Beach Town Council (MBTC) wants to help clean out your closet.
The council’s annual free community trash drive is scheduled to pick up any large items Mission Beach residents want to dispose of, Saturday June 17, before 8 a.m.
That morning, city trash trucks will move south along Strand Way and north along Bayside Lane from Pacific Beach Drive to North Jetty Road, picking up old carpeting, used furniture, mattresses, lawn mowers with the gas and oil drained, metals, wood and yard trimmings and bundled branches under 6-feet long.
Items that contain hazardous waste such as electronic items, appliances, dirt or construction rubble, florescent light bulbs, paint, motor oil or batteries will not be picked up. Hazardous materials must be properly disposed of to prevent the release of toxins into the environment.
Because of the number of residents whose leases expire in June, Mission Beach is often swamped with trash after people leave their apartments. The annual cleanup was organized to help remedy the issue, but the city is threatening to permanently cancel the event if a minimum amount of trash isn’t collected, according to Tracie Anderson, MBTC conservation chair.
“We need to increase our numbers, so we’re really encouraging residents to go into their garages or backyards and cleaning them up this weekend,” Anderson said.
To help increase participation, MBTC is hosting a Cleanest Court Contest. Residents can enter or nominate a court by e-mailing MBTC member Lee Silber at [email protected] or calling (858) 488-4249.
Winners will receive prizes and bragging rights.
For cleanup information, call Anderson at (619) 857-2636. n
