Bird Rock’s PJ to play in CA hockey championship
PJ Smigliani, a third-grader at Bird Rock Elementary School, will travel to San Jose this weekend for the State Ice Hockey Championship. PJ, who has been playing hockey since he was 4, is part of the San Diego Ice Arena team that will play in the Squirt Division of the April 13-15 state tourney.
Based in Mira Mesa, the San Diego Ice Arena team includes 11 other 9- and 10-year-olds from San Diego. SDIA and the Anaheim Wildcats will face the two top teams from Northern California in the championships. This is the first year that SDIA is sending a team to the state games.
Frisbee tourney sails into Mission Bay Park
The sixth annual One Love One Beach Ultimate Frisbee tournament returns to Mariner’s Point at Mission Bay Saturday, April 14, and Sunday, April 15. The tournament begins at 10 a.m. both days, and ends at 4 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Often referred to Frisbee football, the game combines the nonstop movement of soccer with the aerial passing skills needed in football. Teams play on a rectangular field 50 feet long by 30 feet wide with an 8-yard end zone. Players move the disc downfield by passing it to teammates, although the thrower is not allowed to take any steps or run with the Frisbee.
Approximately 240 athletes from San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Tucson and Salt Lake City are expected to participate.
Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the San Diego chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. For information visit www.oneloveonebeach.com.
