Scripps Park will belt out sounds of all the classics, from rock ‘n’ roll to surfer music and the oldies, as the 2006 La Jolla Concerts by the Sea gears up once more.
The music runs from 2 to 4 p.m. every Sunday, from June 25 to Sept. 3.
Into its 23rd year, the concerts have become a legend in La Jolla, attracting between 500 to 15,000 people to the cove, according to Shirleymae Davis, who heads the group of volunteers running the concerts.
“We actually have people who plan their vacations around the concerts,” Davis said.
Rockin’ and rollin’ Rockola will begin the series on June 25. The Corvelles will perform some Motown on July 2, followed by Coastal Communities Concert Band sounding out pop tunes on July 9. Benny Hollman’s Big Band Explosion will bring Big Band jazz on July 16, and the Skinny Little Twits will rev the crowd with original and classic rock on July 23. Swing music will follow with Big Time Operator on July 30. Boogie woogie will start the month of August with Sue Palmer and Her Motel Swing Orchestra on Aug. 6. Yavaz will perform Latin jazz on Aug. 13. Mariachi will hit the park with Mariachi Real de San Diego on Aug. 20. Surfer music will end the month with Beach Boulevard on Aug. 27. The MarDels will finish the series with some oldies on Sept. 3.
The concerts are free and a dance floor is usually set up. Volunteers will sell refreshments to help defray costs.
