With CIFs right around the corner, several local scholastic softball teams are making a run at the playoffs.
One team that has scored few wins but battled this spring is La Jolla High. The Lady Vikings came into this week with a record of 5-16.
Key players to date have included Ana Parma (batting .500, had a three-run home run versus Mission Bay last week); Alyssa Taylor (hitting .800 with a homer and two triples); Lauren Steinmetz (hitting .375 with two homers and three triples); and Onezia Berotte (four home runs). Pitchers Jenny Russell and Rachel Skinner have also played well, according to head coach Ken Davis.
At La Jolla Country Day School, the Lady Torreys entered this week at 6-5 for head coach Jay Berenter.
In action last week, LJCD lost a tough 3-0 decision to Mountain Empire, with sophomore Erica Dawson pitching an outstanding game.
LJCD scored a 14-4 win over Canyon Crest in other action last week, with Dawson picking up the victory on the mound.
Samantha Berenter has led the team at shortstop, having not made an error all season and leading the team in all offensive categories.
Chelsea Burns and Ariel Abbott, the team’s other two seniors, have provided great leadership while contributing more than expected offensively at the plate, according to Jay Berenter.
At The Bishop’s School, the Lady Knights scored an 8-0 win over Canyon Crest Academy last Wednesday.
Natalie Camarda got the win and struck out 13 for Bishop’s (12-3).
Yessica Palmer homered, while Michelle Brunker had three hits in the victory.
