A trio of local girls tennis teams hope to net winning seasons this fall.
At La Jolla Country Day School, the Lady Torreys and head coach Angela Horacek lost in the second round of CIFs a season ago.
Key returnees this season include sophomore Sophia Bursalya, junior Amanda Mulligan, senior Izzy Richardson and newcomer Kelsey Miller.
“We have a young team this year and look for them to be competitive,” Horacek said.
At La Jolla High, the Lady Vikings and head coach Maggie Mulkins went 13-1 last fall, finishing second in CIF Division II play.
Key players this season look to be Hannah Holladay, Alexi Archampbault, Amanda Lin, Christina Graf and Johanna Shieh.
“We lost a lot of key seniors last year, but with the new talent coming in I am hoping for another great season,” Mulkins said. “We are hoping for another great CIF showing.”
At The Bishop’s School, the Lady Knights were 16-2 and Coastal League champions last fall for head coach Jose Ruelas. Bishop’s lost in the CIF Division III semis to Cathedral.
Look for this year’s squad to be paced by Kimmi Cox, Elizabeth Alexander, Sarah Peluso and Camilla Johnston, along with some new freshman talent.
“With Cathedral and La Jolla in our division, we’ll have to focus on our doubles play,” Ruelas said. “We’ll have to help the depth of our team as we lost four players to graduation.”
Ruelas expects La Jolla Country Day School and Santa Fe Christian to be tough foes in the Coastal League race.
