I was surprised to read Danny Morales’ letter to the editor regarding his criticism of the July 23 Beacon article “City OK’s extension of building permits.” As he accurately stated, he is naïve and obviously not a true believer in the capitalistic free-enterprise system, which has made the USA the strongest and best country in the world. There were two important parts to the extension of building permits, the first being for larger project permits directed at saving and creating many jobs for a very depressed construction industry and the second affecting many individual proposed single-family home projects, including our own. It is still our intention to build our lifetime dream home. My wife and I are 72-year residents of the Peninsula area and have been active in building and improving our favorite geographic area, starting several businesses, raising two children and enjoying eight grandchildren after we attended public schools in the San Diego area. The statements “I think that public service should embrace the common good as opposed to the private passions of individuals” is short-sighted. The tax proceeds from local businesses including “Starbucks, Wings, Subway, World Oil, et al” help raise the necessary proceeds to fund Mr. Morales’ favorite projects (FBA) and (DIF). Thank goodness that we have a majority of far-sighted City Council members who recognize the benefits of real estate development along with expanding the business community. I salute the council members who believe in the free enterprise system and oppose an antidevelopment, strict status quo outlook.
