Art Wilmore has stepped down as the Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) men’s head basketball coach after six seasons (2002-08) to become the university’s assistant athletic director of public relations and the associate head coach for the men’s and women’s tennis programs.
“I felt it was a good time to step down,” Wilmore said. “There was no need to stay a year longer.
Wilmore posted a winning record with the PLNU basketball program (105-89), and led the Sea Lions to the conference tournament each of those seasons, qualifying twice for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics tournaments in 2003 and 2008.
Wilmore’s former assistant, Ethan Hamilton, replaces him as men’s head basketball coach after spending the past three years (2005-08) as associate men’s basketball coach.
“Ethan was looking at other head coaching positions,” said Wilmore. “I told him when I hired him that I wanted him involved with coaching decisions, recruiting and after three to five years we would talk about a coaching change,” Wilmore said.
PLNU is 61-33 in the span of 2005-08.
Former assistant coach Jordan Courneya moves up to the assistant men’s basketball coaching position after three years with the team.
“Courneya has done a wonderful job with recruiting,” Wilmore said. “Overall, it’s a win-win situation for the program.”
PLNU officials also noted other coaching changes:
“¢ Joe Schaefer has been promoted to the position of head baseball coach for the university to replace Jack Northam.
“¢ Tim Hall has been named coach for the men’s and women’s soccer programs.
