Hobe Schroeder, like any average American, has seen countless movies on the big screen. The most memorable ones, however, are the movies he’s experienced under the stars.
The 2006 Movie by the Sea will bring “Raiders of the Lost Ark” to the silver screen at Scripps Park on Friday, Aug. 4, at 8:30 p.m.
A smooth jazz band will play at 7:30 p.m. while the sun sets. The 30-by-40-foot screen will dwarf the moviegoers, and the evening’s expenses will cost approximately $5,000.
County Supervisor Pam Slater-Price gave $3,000 to the event and City Council President Scott Peters’ office also contributed. La Jolla Parks and Recreation Inc. and Promote La Jolla Inc. are sponsoring the event.
Despite the popularity of the event in 2004, La Jolla Parks and Rec Inc. couldn’t scrape together enough funds last year. Schroeder, who works for the nonprofit, said the event will have to rely on community support in the future. The show will go on at least for now.
All the community needs to worry about is remembering to bring blankets, low-backed beach chairs and lots of popcorn.
In related news, the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (MCASD) will screen “Airplane!” next Thursday, Aug. 10, at 8 p.m.
The disaster-film spoof kicks off the museum’s new annual event, “Parking Lot Pictures.”Movie fans are asked to bring lawn chairs and blankets to the MCASD parking lot, 700 Prospect St.
The film is free. Concessions will be available for purchase.
