Medea Benjamin, who has been internationally recognized for her peace efforts and is the founder of Code Pink, a women-initiated, grass-roots anti-war organization, will share her stories with community members at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22 at the La Jolla Library.
Benjamin, who has spent time providing humanitarian aid in Iraq and Afghanistan and has visited prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, was nominated in 2005 for a Nobel Peace Prize.
Voices of Women (VOW), a San Diego nonprofit organization, is hosting Benjamin’s lecture and is thrilled that the high-profile activist will be able to share news of her latest endeavors, according to La Jollan Elizabeth Hansen, VOW board member.
“She has just done amazing work in the world, highlighting human-rights violations and trying to bring about justice and peace,” Hansen said. “Sometimes it really helps to speak to someone who has been to a place instead and not taking what we see on CNN for granted.”
The La Jolla Library is located at 7555 Draper Ave. Benjamin’s lecture will be held in the community room.
Voices of Women, founded in 2001 by a San Diego resident, is an organization dedicated to encouraging world-wide peace and equality. The organization will hold its February event, which will include a speaker on Uganda and a performance by the Ugandan Orphans’ Choir, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, 700 Prospect St.
For information about VOW, visit www.voicesofwomen.org or e-mail [email protected].
