Port begins repaving Shelter Island Drive
The Unified Port of San Diego has begun a three-month-long repaving project along a stretch of Shelter Island Drive, from the Silver Gate Yacht Club to the Harbor Police station, according to port officials.
Work began Monday, Jan. 14 and crews will continue through Friday, April 4, said Marguerite Elicone, spokesperson for the Port of San Diego.
“We’ve been wanting to do it for sometime. After a while, the roads start getting rough and bumpy,” she said.
The construction will occur in three phases. Crews will work on a different section of road during each phase.
Although traffic will be impeded during construction, one lane in each direction will be open.
Elicone said crews will try to minimize the impact on traffic flow, but the actual impact is unknown.
“No parking” signs will be posted during construction.
A public parking lot across from the Silver Gate Yacht Club will also be closed to allow room for work trucks, she said.
Crews are scheduled to work Monday through Friday unless otherwise needed, she said.
The $886,250 project awarded to Hazard Construction Co. is part of the port’s maintenance program.
The port uses its estimated $14 million maintenance budget allotted for fiscal year 2008 for maintenance projects throughout the port tidelands, she said.
Projects include street repairs within the ports jurisdiction, shoreline maintenance and water-pump replacement projects, Elicone said.
