SAN DIEGO — County officials are urging pet owners to have their animals microchipped, vaccinated and licensed for the new year. Residents in the unincorporated areas of the county — as well as those in the city of San Diego — can explore the full spectrum of services at the county’s Department of Animal Services shelter on Sunday, Jan. 9 from noon to 2 p.m. in Bonita. The shelter is located at 5821 Sweetwater Road. Pet owners taking advantage of the services will also receive a variety of free pet gifts at this event, according to county officials. The Department of Animal Services will microchip pets for a one-time fee of $20, which includes the registration. Rabies vaccinations for dogs (four months or older) and cats (three months or older) are $6. Amnesty from late fees is offered to owners who have previously failed to license a dog or who have allowed a dog’s annual license to lapse. Cats are not required to be licensed. Microchip pet identification is normally available for dogs, cats and rabbits eight weeks of age or older at any of the county’s animal shelters each Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. For more information, call (619) 767-2675, or visit www.sddac.com.
