A man involved in a 12-hour SWAT standoff in Pacific Beach was sentenced June 3 to one year in jail after he pleaded guilty to felony assault and to resisting an executive officer. Three years’ probation was given to Kevin McGuinness, 53, who was given credit for 120 days in jail by San Diego Superior Court Judge Eugenia Eyherabide. McGuinness’ projected release date is Oct. 4, according to the sheriff’s department. The incident took place April 3 to 4 inside a commercial building at 2900 Garnet Ave., used as a residence. McGuinness fired a shot from a rifle at another man, but the shot missed, and the man was uninjured. The victim fled from the building on the evening of April 3, but McGuinness remained inside and refused leave. Other firearms, and possibly explosives, were inside the building, and a SWAT unit was called to deal with the defendant, who eventually surrendered at 11:05 a.m. April 4. Other charges including possession of an assault weapon, making a criminal threat, assault and possession of a replica metal hand grenade were dismissed after McGuinness pleaded guilty May 5 to two charges. — Neal Putnam
