A Wisconsin man staying in the Crystal Pier cottages drowned off the coast of Pacific Beach on June 25. Surfers found the body of 52-year-old Lonnie Monte Gulseth of Oconomowoc, Wisc. face down in the ocean at approximately 6:50 a.m. According to police reports, the surfers took Gulseth to shore and attempted to resuscitate him, but without success. Medical personnel who arrived at the scene confirmed his death. San Diego police launched an investigation into the death, which San Diego Police Department Northern Division Capt. Chris Ball said did not yield much additional information. “Initially, what we’re looking at is to see if the death is suspicious or unusual,” Ball said. The county Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy on the body and determined drowning as the cause of death, listing cardiac hypertrophy, coronary artery atherosclerosis and a history of seizures as contributing conditions to Gulseth’s death. “There was nothing that indicated to us foul play,” Ball said. “In this particular case, we’ve really got nothing to follow up on. So it pretty much ends there and the next part of it is trying to find the next of kin.”
