Walkers and runners will gather in Balboa Park on Sunday, Nov. 7 for the 14th annual Komen San Diego Race for the Cure. Point Loma resident, Irene Oberbauer, is this year’s honorary Breast Cancer Survivor and will speak at the event, which is anticipated to draw more than 15,000 participants. San Diego City Councilman Todd Gloria will also be present to speak and cheer on the crowd. The 5K course traverses the park and state Route 163, and will feature live music from Dawn Mitschele, Alysse Fischer, JJ Brown, The Groove Kitties, John Torres, Bad Habit and more. Up to 75 percent of funds raised from the 5K stay in San Diego and will help to provide breast health research, diagnostics and treatment for uninsured or underinsured women. The remaining 25 percent will help fund national research. Registration is closed online, but can still be completed the day of the event with a fee of $35 beginning at 6:30 a.m. The opening ceremony will start at 7:20 a.m. and the race will begin at 8 a.m. For more information visit www.komensandiego.org.
