DOWNTOWN — The Park and Recreation board voted 8 to 1 to endorse a 24-hour ban on alcohol consumption at Kate O. Sessions Park in Pacific Beach at a meeting on Aug. 19. This measure follows up another recent amendment to San Diego Municipal Code (SDMC) 56.54, which added the definition of bathers to the code in order to stop the consumption of alcohol by people floating on blow-up rafts in Mission Bay. In 2007, police received 96 calls for service for the park, according to a document from the Park and Recreation board. In 2009, police received 281 total calls; and year-to-date for 2010, police have received 171 calls regarding Kate O. Sessions Park. The possible amendment to the SDMC will be to remove the 12-hour ban under 56.54B and include the park in 56.54A, which dictates a 24-hour ban. This appendix dictates the beach alcohol ban as well. The matter will be sent to the City Council for consideration. —DEBBIE HATCH
