The number of DUI arrests and fatalities was down around California and in San Diego County during this year’s shortened Independence Day weekend, the California Highway Patrol announced on July 6.
From Friday evening to Sunday night, 53 motorists were arrested in San Diego County for driving under the influence, compared to 87 arrests made in 2014, the CHP said. Statewide, there were 930 DUI arrests made in 2015, compared to 1,343 arrests made last year during the holiday weekend.
Across the state there were 26 fatal DUI accidents this year, compared to 32 fatalities last year, with one fatality in San Diego each of the two years.
CHP Officer Tommy Doerr said this year’s reporting period for DUI arrests and fatalities was one day shorter than last year’s since the holiday fell on a weekend. He said this year’s lower figures do not necessarily mean there were less drunk drivers on the road compared to last year.
