The issue of Floatopias, floating alcohol parties that skirt San Diego’s beach alcohol ban, is on the San Diego City Council’s docket for the council meeting on Monday, July 26 at 2 p.m. in City Hall. The City Council will discuss adding the term “bathers” to the San Diego Municipal Code 56.54, which bans alcohol consumption at the beach. This would make it illegal for bathers floating in the water to consume alcohol within one marine league of the shore. If the City Council approves this as an emergency item, it would go into effect immediately. Otherwise, if approved as a non-emergency item, it would go into effect no sooner than early September.
