Stakelum named to head Rotary Club in 2007-08
Richard A. Stakelum has been chosen to serve as the new 2007-08 president of the Point Loma Rotary Club.
A member since 2002, Stakelum has been on the Rotary’s board of directors for the last two years.
His term began July 1 and will continue through June 30, 2008.
Stakelum, an Ocean Beach resident for more than 25 years, is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of San Diego School of Leadership and Education Sciences. Stakelum is originally from New Orleans, attending the University of Southwest Louisiana in Lafayette.
He holds a bachelor of science degree in computer science and a master of business degree from National University.
He is employed as the chief knowledge manager for the commander of the Naval Special Warfare Command in Coronado.
“The Point Loma Rotary Club specializes in philanthropic projects in the Point Loma area and around the world,” Stakelum said.
The club participates in projects in Tijuana, South America and Africa. Stakelum describes the Point Loma Rotary Club as a group of local businesses and community leaders who “enjoy promoting service above self.”
At the moment, the Rotary Club is involved in the Pacific Portal Project on Shelter Island, where artist and San Diego resident James Hubble created a new gazebo.
The club is also involved with the Ocean Beach Entryway Project and works together with high schools in the area to provide leadership training and to honor outstanding performances, Stakelum said.
The Point Loma Rotary Club meets every Friday at noon at the Southwestern Yacht Club, 2702 Qualtrough St.

Provancha wins gold at youth sailing event
Briana Provancha, a member of the Southwestern Yacht Club in Point Loma, recently grabbed the gold medal at the Youth Sailing World Championship in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
The event was presented by the International Sailing Federation.
Provancha successfully represented the U.S. during the 37th Volvo Youth Sailing Youth Championships, the pinnacle event of youth sailing around the world, in the women’s double-handed 29er class.
Southwestern Yacht Club will host the Olympic Trials for the 49er class between Oct. 4 and 21.
PLNU professor receives Wal-Mart teaching award
Dr. Dan Croy of Point Loma Nazarene University was recently awarded the prestigious Wal-Mart Teaching Excellence Award during the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs national convention in Orlando, Fla.
Croy won the ACBSP’s Region 7 competition, which spans the member colleges and university western states and provinces in the United States and Canada.
The award was created by the ACBSP and funded by the Wal-Mart Foundation to recognize and support teaching excellence and was presented at a banquet held in honor of the recipients.
Also representing PNLU and the Fermanian School of Business at the convention were Profs. Bruce Schooling, Becky Havens, Jim McEliece and Randy Ataide.
Schackelford inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta
Point Loma High School graduate Emily Schackelford recently was inducted in Alpha Lambda Delta at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo.
Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honorary for first-year students of high academic achievement.
Schackelford is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Schackelford.
Emily is a sophomore theater arts major at Stephens College.
The college was established in 1833, and officials tout it as being historically committed to meeting the changing needs of women.
Stephens engages students in an innovative educational experience focused on pre-professional fields and the performing arts and grounded in liberal arts.
OB fund-raiser dinner set to aid Entryway Fund
Very soon, residents can enjoy a decadent wine-pairing meal for a good community cause at Thee Bungalow in Ocean Beach.
To help raise critical dollars for the Ocean Beach Community Development Corporation’s Entryway Fund, the group is organizing a special dinner Aug. 8 and extending an invitation to residents with a passion for OB.
“We expect people from the community and people from outside the community. People that care about Ocean Beach,” said Ann Kelsey, a member of the OBCDC board of directors.
Tickets for the four-course French-inspired meal ” each course served with one of the many selections of wines offered by the restaurant ” are $150.
“We can hold a hundred people, so we are hoping to raise $15,000,” Kelsey said.
All proceeds will go to the entryway fund.
Some of the projects slated in the Entryway Master Plan are the unification of the northern entryways into Ocean Beach, the improvement of traffic flow, the enhancement of access to Robb Field and the creation of a safer environment for pedestrians and bicyclists.
The goal is to create an entryway and streetscape that reflect the unique flavor of the community, said Kelsey.
“We want to maintain the character of OB,” Kelsey said. “Our goal is to encourage people to take an active part in the Ocean Beach projects.”
The fund-raising dinner will take place from 6 to 9 p.m.

Midnight Madness Fun Bicycle Ride rolls closer
Residents will have an opportunity to be active, have fun and enjoy the beautiful Downtown skyline at night during the 34th annual Midnight Madness Fun Bicycle Ride on Saturday, Aug. 18.
An estimated 2,000 cyclists are expected to ride along some of San Diego’s most beautiful waterfront and historic areas during the fund-raising event. The course is approximately 20 miles long.
“We expect the fastest riders to make it in an hour,” said event coordinator Tiffany Olson.
The Midnight Madness Fun Bicycle Ride is a primarily flat, looping course starting at the San Diego County Administration Building through Harbor Island, Shelter Island, Old Town and Downtown.
“The riders follow the rules of traffic,” Olson said. “Because it is at midnight, there won’t be too many cars on the streets.”
Riders from San Diego County, Southern California and Arizona have already signed up, she said. Riders can still register online at www.active.com or visit www.sandiegomidnightmadness.-org. It is also possible to sign up at the night of the event.
Registration begins at 8 p.m. Aug. 18 with the ride beginning at midnight.
In the start and finish area, participants will find vendor booths, music and entertainment. The Midnight Madness Fun Bicycle Ride is co-hosted by the San Diego Council of Hostelling International USA, the county of San Diego and the Uptown Optimist Club of San Diego.
Proceeds from the fund-raiser will benefit nonprofit youth education and outreach programs.
“Some of the riders will be dressed up in costumes,” Olson said. “It is going to be a lot of fun and an awesome view.”
