UC Talks podcasts
The University City Community Association’s podcast program, UC Talks, is now available and can be found on the universitycitynews.org website or go to SoundCloud.com and search “UC Talks,” where you can subscribe for free and be alerted when new podcasts are posted. Recent podcasts include conversations with Barry Bernstein, UCCA president; Melissa Martin, UC Library branch manager; and Ruth DeSantis, University City Community Foundation president. Each monthly newsletter will also be recorded and is a service provided to those who cannot read the newsletter, and for those who do not get a physical copy of the newsletter. Sights & Sounds Showcase The University City High School Music Boosters is having its fifth annual Sights and Sounds Showcase on April 19, 6 to 9 p.m. at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, Jacobs Family Campus, 4126 Executive Drive. The talent show and fundraiser helps support the school’s music program. This wonderful community event gives local youth, and some high school staff members, the opportunity to show their talent while raising money to support the music program. There will be music, dance, singing and a concert by salsa band Rumba Y Sol, whose bandmembers includes UCHS’s very own music director Brandon Corenman. Besides the talented entertainment, there will be food, a dessert buffet, and a silent auction. Tickets are $45 for adults, $15 for students (ages 5-20) and available from the JCC or a UCHS music student. Standley Park’s annual Spring Egg Hunt will be held on Saturday, April 13 from 10 a.m. to noon, at the great lawn by the Standley Park Recreation Center, 3585 Governor Drive. The Egg Hunt will start promptly at 10 a.m. for all ages. Bring your own basket to collect eggs for decorating or placing on a Seder plate. The Rec Center will offer face painting, egg dying, arts and crafts, jumper and more. Good-bye Jesse
And speaking of Recreation Centers… University City would like to offer a bittersweet goodbye, and a big congratulations to Jesse DeLille, who has been a helpful and familiar face at the Standley Park Rec Center for years. He has been promoted to the La Jolla Recreation Center director, 615 Prospect St. UC wishes him well in his new position. Rose Canyon bird walks
Friends of Rose Canyon invites the public to free spring bird walks during April and May. Spring is the best time of year to see and hear a great variety of birds in Rose Canyon, including migrants from the tropics, winter residents getting ready to migrate north, and year-round residents. Many birds are in breeding plumage, showing spectacular colors. Some birds are singing to establish territories and attract mates. Other species are building nests, gleaning insects off the trees, feeding their young. Birds of prey are on the wing, courting, hunting, and carrying prey to their nests. Rose Canyon becomes a different world during spring bird migration. Join one of the walks to experience this dramatic annual display of nature in our midst. After all the rains, Rose Canyon is green and beautiful. Walks are hosted by Friends of Rose Canyon and led by skilled birders. Beginners and experienced birders are all welcomed, and best for those ages 9 and up. Binoculars are provided if needed. Walks are easy, and participants may leave at any time during the walk. Reminder that there are no bathrooms or water in Rose Canyon Open Space Park. Meet at the trailhead at the intersection of Regents Road and Lahitte Court. Walks start at 8 a.m. and run until 10 a.m. Please arrive 10 minutes early to park and borrow binoculars. Dates are: Saturdays – April 13, 20, and May 11; Sundays – April 28 and May 5. April is National Volunteer Month, and volunteers make a big difference in University City. Volunteers make up the University City Community Association, its foundation, deliver monthly newsletters, join Neighborhood Watch groups, participate in People for a Clean UC monthly cleanups, support Friends of the UC Library, and serve on various local boards and event planning groups.
