Warren-Walker students take first at science fairs
Warren-Walker Middle School students and Point Loma residents Lily Edwards, David Lloyd and Connor Keefe each placed first in their divisions at the Greater San Diego Area Science and Engineering Fair held April 1 to 6.
Foster Collins, also a Warren-Walker Middle School student and Point Loma resident, took home first place in the category of applied mathematics and structures at the 57th annual California State Science Fair after having won one of four Junior Sweepstakes awards in the regional fair.
The state science fair was held May 19 and 20. More than 900 students in grades 6 through 12 competed from 359 schools throughout the state for awards totaling over $50,000.
Evan Becker earns
lifetime achievement honor
Point Loma resident Evan E. Becker, managing principal of Red Capital Group in San Diego, has been named to receive the San Diego Housing Federation’s (SDHF) first Lifetime Achievement Award.
The award was presented Thursday, June 12 at the federation’s annual Affordable Housing and Community Development awards at the Handlery Hotel in Mission Valley.
Becker came to California in 1988 to become executive director of the San Diego Housing Commission. During his tenure, he led the development of scattered site public housing, preservation of “at-risk” affordable housing, development of the city’s housing trust fund and efforts to build the affordable housing capability of other organizations.
Becker also served as Carlsbad’s housing and redevelopment director, developing and implementing one of the nation’s most productive inclusionary housing programs, including two HUD national “best practices” award-winning projects.
Bruhn named company’s director of development
Point Loma resident John A. Bruhn, Sr. has been selected by Atlas Environmental Services, Inc. to serve as the director of development for the largest locally owned tree service company.
Bruhn served previously as a Marine officer, as University of California, San Diego’s assistant business manager and an instructor in business at San Diego State University and headed the county’s fiscal and law and justice agencies. He also served for 15 years as president of a San Diego financial institution.
Johnson among local women honored by YMCA
Lisa Johnson of Point Loma was among 80 local women honored during the YWCA of San Diego’s Tribute to Women & Industry (TWIN) awards luncheon on June 27.
Johnson, an employee of the Corky McMillin Cos., was among those recognized by their firm’s executives, coworkers, families and friends.
The YWCA’s TWIN awards were held at the San Diego Convention Center.
Last year’s event drew an estimated 1,000 attendees and raised about $287,000 in support of YWCA programs and services. Kimberly Hunt of Channel 10 News served as mistress of ceremonies for the event.

Point Loman joins SDNHM board of directors
The San Diego Society of Natural History and the San Diego Natural History Museum have elected new officers to its board of directors, including a Point Loma man as board secretary.
The new officers will serve in their positions for one year.
Jon Schmid is a founding partner of Cook & Schmid, a full-service marketing communications and public relations firm based in San Diego. Schmid specializes in strategic counsel and media relations. He grew up in San Diego and is a 2004 graduate of LEAD San Diego.
Schmid is active with a number of local civic and industry organizations. He earned an MA in journalism from the University of Missouri with concentrations in public affairs reporting and computer-assisted reporting. His prior experience includes more than a decade of work as a professional journalist at a number of news outlets, including the Chicago Sun-Times.
As a journalist, Schmid was twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting. His work as a public relations practitioner has been recognized nationally by the Public Relations Society of America. Schmid is married and has three children. He currently serves on the museum’s Institutional Advancement and Dos Aguilas Fiesta Committee.
The San Diego Natural History Museum is the second oldest scientific institution in California, third oldest west of the Mississippi.
A binational museum, its mission is to interpret the natural world through research, education and exhibits; to promote understanding of the evolution and diversity of southern California and the peninsula of Baja California and to inspire in all a respect for nature and the environment.
