Both the Bishop’s School and La Jolla High football teams punched their tickets last weekend into the next round of the CIF playoffs.
Bishop’s remained undefeated as it posted a 47-13 victory over visiting Vincent Memorial last Saturday.
QB Tommy Wornham threw for 276 yards and three TDs. Saron Hood caught two TD passes for 140 yards, while Tim Costello added three catches for 102 yards. Jacob Kelly had a pair of touchdown runs.
The defense was led by linebacker Mike P. Jensen’s 18 tackles.
Bishop’s will face Horizon this weekend in a CIF semifinal contest.
“Horizon is a very dangerous team,” Bishop’s head coach Mike David noted. “Their backfield is the toughest we have faced all year. We must have a tremendous defensive effort Friday night in order to go to the finals.”
The Knights topped their Coastal League rivals 42-7 earlier this season.
La Jolla, meantime, also made sure it keeps playing, tallying a 31-7 quarterfinal win over Coronado last Friday.
The Vikings set the tone for the evening on their first drive after returning the opening kickoff to the 32. The Viking offensive line took control of the line of scrimmage and senior tailback Jerrell Agnew did the rest.
Agnew’s seven runs on the drive for 61 yards was capped by an 11-yard scamper around left end for the touchdown (Lee Abelkop PAT), giving La Jolla (6-4) a 7-0 lead.
A Coronado drive was snuffed out on the next series as La Jolla’s Jonathan Flores recovered.
Early in the second quarter, Agnew again carried the rushing load, this time on a 65-yard drive.
Agnew scored from five yards out to make it 14-0.
La Jolla’s Harper Allen got the next turnover, allowing the Vikings to regain the ball. That drive culminated in a 30-yard Abelkop field goal to make it 17-0.
La Jolla would make it 24-0 on another Agnew run (one yard), with the key play being a 62-yard strike from Matt Mulvey to Garret Anderson.
Coronado drove the ball on the opening drive of the second half, only to turn it over again. La Jolla’s Thomas Bowman recovered the fumble to thwart the drive.
The two teams exchanged final scores as La Jolla celebrated its sixth win of the season. La Jolla’s Robbie Beathard intercepted a pass to end the game.
On the evening, Agnew carried the ball 29 times for 183 yards and three touchdowns, while Ja’ Rodd Watson had 86 yards and one touchdown. On the defensive side, the Vikings were led by Beathard with 10 unassisted tackles.
“I am real proud of our defense,” La Jolla High head coach Dave Ponsford remarked. “Coronado is a scrappy team, and our defense did not allow them to score until after the outcome was determined. After missing playing time over the last two games with an ankle injury, it was nice to see Agnew get on track again. The line, along with powerback Henry Nawahine and Watson, provided Jerrell with plenty of room.”
La Jolla moves on this Friday to meet Valley Center at home. The Vikings scored an exciting 22-20 win over Valley Center earlier this season.
Finally, La Jolla Country Day School saw its season end in a 38-7 loss to Francis Parker.
The loss was the second one of the season to Parker and, just like in the first meeting of the two teams, the Torreys struggled with the Lancers’ speed and size.
LJCD (7-4) QB Derek Hatfield led the Torreys in rushing with 58 yards on 13 carries, including a 10- yard TD run.
The LJCD defense hung tough throughout the night, led by Andy Altman with nine tackles. Cody Maxwell added eight tackles and one sack.
“Although the defeat was a bitter pill to swallow, the 2007 Torrey football season was an outstanding success,” LJCD head coach Jeff Hutzler noted. “The program set a school record for number of boys out and demonstrated terrific work ethic and great enthusiasm.
“Our seniors were outstanding individuals and team members who set positive examples for our youngest players, and the team is loaded with underclassmen talent.”
LJCD collected its fourth straight Pacific League title this season.
