Univ. of Phoenix offers new nursing programs
The University of Phoenix San Diego campus announced its new program to certify nursing professionals who wish to teach and guide the education of up-and-coming nurse practitioners with a four-course, 12-unit certification program.
Nurses who currently have a bachelor of science degree in nursing (BSN) or a master’s degree in nursing (MSN) can take the education specialization to teach as adjunct faculty in area nursing schools.
This can help ease the burden of students who are waiting for admission into traditional nursing programs, and they can complete the needed coursework to begin their career in the nursing and health care fields.

CPI honors city workers
The Center on Policy Initiatives, at its 10th anniversary gala in October, honored all city workers for their high-quality, dependable services under pressure. Eight city workers from four unions and various departments represented their 11,000 colleagues in accepting the award.
CPI gave wall plaques to each of the unions representing city workers: the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), the Municipal Employees Association, the San Diego Police Officers Association and the San Diego City Firefighters.
CPI is a San Diego-based research and advocacy center dedicated to economic issues facing working people.
Satisfaction polls of San Diego residents consistently exceed 90 percent for city services and 99 percent for firefighters, despite serious understaffing of the department.
CPI also noted that city workers have earned a number of statewide, national and international awards for outstanding service, innovations and cost savings. San Diego sanitation drivers received the first-place Sanitation Driver of the Year award from Environmental Industry Associates four times in the past seven years, more than any other city in North America.
The Water Department won the 2007 statewide Flex Your Power award for outstanding energy efficiency. With the pioneering Bid-to-Goal program, Metropolitan Wastewater workers saved taxpayers more than $90 million in five years and won Harvard University’s JFK School of Government Innovations in Government Award.

Liberty Station welcomes 2 new commercial tenants
Two more commercial tenants have joined the ranks of the growing 361-acre Liberty Station community at the former Naval Training Center in Point Loma.
Joining the bustling bayside neighborhood will be Tropical Smoothie Cafe in the fitness center and MITRE, a technology nonprofit in the office district.
Liberty Station redevelopment officials say the fine dining, retail, cultural venues, recreation and ample green space is quickly becoming the hub of San Diego.
Tropical Smoothie Cafe will occupy a 1,456-square-foot space at 2751 Roosevelt Road (Historic Gym Building 210), a facility that will be anchored by LAVA Sport & Fitness, featuring The Boxing Club.
Tropical Smoothie Cafe expects to open for business this month.
The second new tenant has already begun operating at Liberty Station.
MITRE, a not-for-profit organization, specializes in systems engineering, information technology, operational concepts and enterprise modernization.
MITRE also has its own independent research and development program that explores new technologies and their uses. MITRE’s 15,899-square-foot office space is located at 2280 Historic Decatur Road (Building 901).
“Liberty Station has experienced great success with its commercial leasing,” said Greg Block, communications manager for the Corky McMillin Cos. “We’re excited that Tropical Adventures and MITRE are joining the Liberty Station family, adding to this premiere destination to live, work, shop and play.”
The 361-acre Liberty Station community, a joint development between the city’s redevelopment agency and McMillin, boasts 125 acres of parks, open space and a boat channel, shopping villages and restaurants; a 28-acre civic, arts and cultural district; the nine-hole Sail Ho Golf Club; three hotels on two sites; and six schools. Liberty Station anticipates a majority of its capacity to be filled by the end of 2008.
