Summer sports camps and kids just seem to go together.For more than two decades, that has been the case at The Bishop’s School.In its 23rd year, The Bishop’s School youth sports camp is designed to provide a variety of activities that teach new skills as well as develop and encourage the skills a camper brings to the program. “Grouped according to age, campers rotate throughout the day from field to gym to optional aquatics activities,” Bishop’s Youth Sports Camp Director Jim Fales noted.A staff of experienced and enthusiastic coaches and teachers lead each of the five, one-week sessions running June 26 to July 28.Fales has been involved with the summer programs for more than 20 years and is the director of aquatics and head coach of Bishop’s boys’ varsity water polo program. For the tennis player in the family, The Bishop’s School Tennis Camp offers a program that is known for its emphasis on small instructional groups and individual attention. The camp is designed to provide basic instruction for the beginning player as well as enhancing the skills of the more advanced player. Campers will receive instruction on correct techniques, proper court position and tennis-specific conditioning exercises. Jose Ruelas, a certified United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) P1 professional and 18-year member of the USPTA, is the director of tennis at The Bishop’s School and the director of the summer tennis camp. For those interested in basketball, volleyball and learning proper strength and agility techniques, this summer Bishop’s is also the place to be.The summer basketball clinics are modeled after the Bishop’s basketball program, focusing on personalized attention, skill-building and positive feedback.Every day there will be full-court games and at the conclusion of each session players will receive motivational handouts. Tom Tarantino, The Bishop’s School athletic director and boys’ varsity basketball coach, handles the basketball duties.The Knights Strength & Agility Clinic is designed to help student athletes in grades nine through 12 improve their strength, speed, agility, flexibility and endurance. The program consists of a series of functional exercises, which helps improve balance, coordination, reaction time, explosiveness and stability, combined with resistance and speed training to benefit all athletes regardless of their sport. This program begins June 26 and ends Aug. 4. Jason Charlebois, certified strength and conditioning specialist and Bishop’s certified athletic trainer; and Charles Johnson, Bishop’s strength and conditioning coach, direct this camp. The Bishop’s School Junior Water Polo Clinic offers a co-ed program designed for beginning and intermediate players under the direction of Fales. Experience is not necessary. Workouts include conditioning, individual and small-group skill-building drills, game situations, and scrimmages culminating in a tournament on the final day.Classroom sessions will cover offensive and defensive team concepts, mental preparation and team strategy.Finally, girls volleyball clinics will be held under the direction of Bishop’s School Head Volleyball Coach Tod Mattox, beginning next week. The Advanced Volleyball Clinic (grades nine to 12) will take place June 13-16, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The advanced session is reserved for girls who expect to play varsity volleyball in the fall or for younger players who play at the varsity level. The camp is designed to help players prepare for the 2006 season. Emphasis will be placed on passing and serving fundamentals and advanced hitting and blocking techniques.Beginning and Intermediate Volleyball Clinics are as follows (all Monday through Thursday, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.): Session I, July 10-13; Session II, July 17-20; Session III, July 24-27. The above clinics are reserved for girls entering grades six through 10 who are beginners or who expect to play on the junior high or junior varsity level in the 2006 season.
