Zero-tolerance talk
The following letter was sent to the Mayor’s Office, City Attorney’s Office and City Council.
Re: “The Brew House has a reputation for serving minors. It’s somewhat of a hangout for La Jolla High School kids. They don’t check IDs.” ” Craig McClellan, attorney for Cynthia Kauanui. This quote from a Union-Tribune story states it all (“Surfer’s mom sues over death,” July 23).
As soon as the school semester begins, please send someone to have a zero-tolerance talk with the principal, staff teachers and students of La Jolla High. All places that serve liquor should be verboten to students of San Diego County Schools ” regardless of age (we don’t have any 21-year-olds in the system, do we?!)
Until then, please order the Brew House closed while you launch an immediate investigation into why they are allowing juveniles on the premises and serving them alcohol to get drunker and drunker.
This, among many others along the beach cities, is one liquor license that ought to be revoked immediately!
Please advise me of your immediate actions and forthcoming headway.
Lee A. Schoenbart, La Jolla

Maine point about seals
We have come to know the seals of Children’s Cove in La Jolla during this past year, because our son moved to La Jolla last July. What a treasure, especially during “pupping” season!
My husband and I live on the coast of Maine, which by most standards is “breathtaking” each day of the year, no matter the season. The ocean varies in her moods and never ceases to amaze, but we do not have the gift of “wildlife” that nature has bestowed upon you. At one point in March, I visited the seals along with their pups in Children’s Cove, witnessed a pair of dolphins swimming up the coast, and enjoyed both a gigantic sea lion and pelicans ” all within a morning!
We ask that San Diego not dredge Children’s Beach in order to drive the colony of seals away ” seals who breed, play and hunt in their natural environment. La Jolla’s residents have a wonderful sandy beach for humans a “walk” away and do not need this small beach.
We are currently looking at properties in the San Diego area and would hope that San Diego will protect Children’s Cove for the seals.

Out of the basement
Kudos to Point Loma resident Conrad Prebys for his generosity to UCSD’s Music Program! (“UCSD sings song of thanks for $3M gift,” Village News, July 17, page B·1.) According to UCSD’s Rand Steiger, “It’s good for the community as well because there aren’t very many good venues for music in San Diego,” Steiger said.
Well, we’re working on that right here on the Point, too! I’d like to encourage other Point Lomans to support community music venues as Mr. Prebys has, beginning with the proposed Music Center at Point Loma High School. Like UCSD, it is our goal to take our students out of the basement (or in our case, an overcrowded, unsafely situated classroom) and place them in a state-of-the-art Music Center that will be the culmination of their K-12 music education. But we need our alumni and friends to help!
Music changes lives, and we know it helps keep kids in school. The Music Center will provide PLHS with the space to give more kids a chance to play music and stay engaged. To help, visit http://www.plhsfaa.org/pp_musiccenter.html. For more information, google “PLHS Music Center.” Thank you!

Barbara Samilson, Principal, Point Loma High School
